This is for advanced ceramic students only.

This five-week intensive course offers a comprehensive introduction to the use of fusible glass in low fire clay, designed for students eager to expand their artistic and technical skills in ceramic arts. The program emphasizes both practical and theoretical knowledge, ensuring participants gain a well-rounded understanding of this unique art form.

Course Overview

The curriculum begins with the fundamentals of working with glass and its integration into low fire clay bodies. Students will learn about the various types of fusible glass, their compatibility with different clays, and the science behind low/mid temperature firing processes.

Safety Protocols

A strong emphasis is placed on safety throughout the course. Participants will be instructed on proper handling of glass materials, safe kiln operation, and the importance of protective gear. The class will address common hazards and best practices for studio cleanliness to prevent accidents and ensure a safe creative environment.

Forms and Techniques

Students will explore a range of forms suitable for combining glass and clay, including tiles, vessels, and sculptural objects. Instruction will cover methods of embedding and fusing glass with clay, considerations for shrinkage and expansion, and how to design pieces that exploit the unique qualities of both materials.

Special Considerations

The course delves into the technical nuances specific to using glass with low/mid fire clay. Topics include thermal compatibility, cracks and crazing, color interactions, and how firing schedules impact the final result. Students will also learn how to troubleshoot common issues and adapt designs for successful outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

Understand the properties and behavior of fusible glass in low fire ceramic settings

Apply essential safety measures when handling glass and operating kilns

Create a variety of forms integrating both glass and clay

Identify and address technical challenges unique to this art form

Produce a portfolio of finished pieces demonstrating learned techniques

By the end of the five weeks, students will have developed the skills and confidence needed to create original works of art that successfully combine glass and clay, as well as a solid foundation for further exploration in this dynamic medium.
