Detail, Storytelling, and the Power of Post-Processing

    Thursdays, July 11-25, 2019

    6:30 - 9:00 PM

    $66

In this three-session course, artist and photographer Erin Barnard will teach students how to create artful photographs in their daily lives and the lives of others. Participants will learn about detail shots, storytelling with still life images, directing lifestyle shoots and the power of post processing. Each guest will need an iPhone or Android with a functional camera and the ability to download suggested apps.

Session 1: Still Life/Social Media imagery. Every day life moments can be captured in the details. The cup of coffee next to your laptop, your toes in the sand. We want to view the world around us as an opportunity to capture moments that allow an audience a glimpse into our experience. Learn how to avoid background distractions, how to find the right lighting or angle, and how to add elements from around the space to balance your photo.

    Session 2: Lifestyle photography.
This session will include a description of lifestyle photography, when guests will likely apply lifestyle photography to sessions, and how to direct moments without posing. A brief scenario will be described for photographing newborns, children, single adults, and families.  Guests will come up with three scenarios in their own life that would be conducive for lifestyle portraiture. Guests will then partner up and set up and capture a few lifestyle scenarios in and around the Arts Center.

Session 3: The Power of Post Processing.
Even a basic photo can be enhanced significantly through the power of post processing. Participants will be introduced to two phone apps that allow fast and efficient editing of images taken in the past two sessions. We will discuss the the mood of the image and finding our personal style. Participants will have time to practice the filter styles and come up with their unique editing style.

Join instructor Claire Hedden for this five-week ceramics course. No experience is necessary, all skill levels are welcome. Students have the option of working on the potter's wheel, using hand-building techniques... or both!

Enrollment in this class provides access to MCAC's kilns and our full range of ceramic glazes. Enrolled students may also work on their own during open studio hours, at no additional charge. Please check the bulletin board outside of the classrooms for our most current open studio schedule.

Class size is limited to eight to allow for individual instruction. Early registration is encouraged; seats typically sell out in advance. Experienced potters are welcome to join this class to experiment and learn new techniques. Student work is fired on-site by our ceramics studio assistant, allowing everyone to take home finished pieces.
