6:30-9:00 PM

This is a 6-week class open to intermediate to advanced throwers

We will start by taking inspiration from historical vessels from books or online resources. That’s right this class starts with research! You will choose a culture and period that you will investigate and draw inspiration from. The purpose is to develop our eye, our understanding of history, and continue to develop and improve technical skills throwing by drawing from a historical vase, pitcher, or teapot. You will make a 2-3 more-time intensive piece that have a FORM inspired by history. The surface completion is up to you.

Practice of wheel throwing principles and techniques will enable development of skills and further their understanding of various surface techniques in wet, leather-hard, bone-dry, and bisque stages. Some specific goals will include throwing and assembling, lidded jars, throwing more complex forms, and learning to trim with more efficiency. Students will be challenged to be intentional with the process and set achievable goals and have some silly fun along the way.

Objectives:
-Learn approaches to creating objects that draw from a specific history
-Contemplate surface choices that work well to make the form “yours”
-Learn to study historical forms (scale, volume, proportions, and details)

Intermediate-advanced students only.
Includes a shelf at the MCAC and access to open studio hours.
No guest registration.

Mission Statement: We encourage and promote the appreciation, study, cultivation, development, and practice of art for the benefit of all the people, cultures and communities of McLean County.
