Draw Your Breath Art Challenge

Did you know that May is Mental Health Month? One in five people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime and everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health. A great way to express and start a conversation about what is happening inside out minds is through art! The MCAC is using the daily Art Challenges this month in an attempt to help with the stress and anxiety that surround us especially during this time of quarantine. 

Today’s exercise is to Draw Your Breath. Place your pencil, crayon or chosen drawing medium on the paper. Take a second to notice and observe your breathing. Imagine your breath as a line and represent this on the paper. Play around with different colors based on how you feel. Notice the speed of your breathing, does that change your line, the length of it, the width of it? Your line can be continuous or lots of different lines to represent your breathing. You can record different breaths from throughout the day or just one focused session. There is no wrong way to do today’s exercise, you are simply taking a moment to capture your breathing in art form.
